5 card stud rules are quite similar to those of 7 card stud. However, the game is played with five cards and only one of them is dealt face-down, which makes players see 80% of cards belonging to other players and changes the strategy and the general feel of the game. 5 card stud is a less popular game than its predecessor 7 card stud. Many players do not find it exciting enough to see most of the opponents cards. However, 5 card stud is easier to play and can serve as a good introduction to Stud poker games.

Rules for Playing 5-Card Stud Poker:

If you are familiar with 7 card stud, the only thing you need to learn about 5 card stud is the dealing sequence. For those who are new to Stud poker we post a detailed play sequence of 5 card stud:

  • All players ante. The size of the ante is normally equal to the table denomination or to the minimum betting limit.
  • Every player is dealt two cards: one face-down (the hole card) and one face-up.
  • The first betting round occurs (this and further betting rounds start with the player who has the highest poker hand among his face-up cards)
  • The third card is dealt face-up to each player.
  • The second betting round takes place.
  • The fourth card is dealt face-up.
  • The third betting round.
  • The fifth face-up card is dealt.
  • The final betting round.
  • The Showdown.

The player with the highest hand wins the pot, unless the game is played in High/Low or Lowball format.

5 card stud has standard betting rounds with the only exception of the player with the highest face-up hand opening betting regardless of his position. Betting then proceeds in the clockwise direction according to standard rules.
