What is Roulette?

Roulette is quite a simple game. The dealer (croupier) spins a wheel with numbered slots and rolls a small ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel. When the wheel slows down, the ball falls into one of the slots. The number of the slot wins. Players may bet on a particular number or on a group of numbers.

International Roulette:

In the United States, Canada, Caribbean Islands and other North American gambling countries, roulette rules and procedures are completely identical.

American Roulette

The wheel of American roulette has 38 identical slots. 36 of them are numbered 1 to 36 and are applied black or red colors, while two other numbers are green and have 0 and 00 numbers on them. Numbers are not located consecutively. 0 and 00 are situated on the opposite sides, while 0 is followed by odd numbers and 00 by even numbers in the clockwise direction, so 1 is opposite to 2, 3 is opposite to 4 and so on until 35, which is opposite to 36. Black numbers are always opposite to red ones.

Maximum of six players can play at a roulette table. Unlike European roulette, where players bet normal casino chips, American roulette is played with special personal chips that can be purchased at the roulette table. These chips are of 6 different colors and do not have any predetermined value. Each player purchases and bets with chips of his personal color, so the dealer immediately sees whose bet wins.

The default value of these personal chips is determined by the table rules. It usually is either 25 or 50 cents, but the player may set the value to what he wants. The dealer will simply place a sample personal chip together with a standard casino chip upon the rim of the wheel, and from that moment on, all personal chips of the particular player will be worth the value of the casino chip placed near it. Besides, players may bet with 1, 5 and 25 dollars standard casino chips, but at least one personal chip must be used to determine the owner of the bet.

How to Bet?

Roulette betting layout is divided into two parts: inside area and outside area. The inside area consist of 38 betting spaces with all roulette numbers and is destined to single number bets. It also can be used to place a single bet on 2 to 6 different numbers at once. Single number bets are paid 35 to 1; double number bets: 17 to 1; triple bets: 11 to 1; quadruple bets: 8 to 1 and six number bets are paid 5 to 1.
Outside Area:
The outside area is used for betting on groups of numbers. Black/red, odd/even and 1-18/19-36 group bets are paid even money. Two additional bets at the outside area are 1-12/13-24/25-36 and another bet, where a player can choose one of three 12 inconsequent numbers groups. These two bets are paid 2 to 1.
Inside Area:
If a players wins an inside bet, the dealer pays him directly, while outside bet winnings are placed at the betting area near the original bet, and it is up to the player whether to take the chips or to leave them for the next bet.

As far as all bets are paid as if there were 36 numbers, but there actually are 38, roulette, as all other casino games, is profitable for the house. The house edge of American roulette is 5.26%. Unlike that, European roulette has only one zero (00 slot does not exist), which changes the balance to 37/36 and produces only 2.7% house edge.
