Mexican Stud, also called Roll Your Own, players choose what cards they want to expose to others and what cards to hide, keeping the main format of three face-down and four face-up cards. Actually, Mexican Stud is similar to standard Seven Card Stud, with the difference that all cards are dealt face-down and players choose which of them will be revealed.

Playing Mexican Stud Online:

How is Mexican Stud Played?

Each player receives three face-down cards. When all players see their cards, by the dealer's signal they turn one of these three cards face up. A betting round, opened by the player with the highest exposed card, follows. Another card is then dealt face-up and players once again reveal one of the three hole cards they have. This once again is followed by a betting round. Two more cards are dealt the same way and two more betting rounds take place. The last card is dealt face-down and remains so until the showdown. The last betting round takes place and the game ends with the player, who can combine the best five card poker hand out of his seven cards, taking the pot.

The format of Mexican Stud that allows players to choose their face-up cards involves a different strategy for the game. Players can bluff more effectively, exposing the best cards, while their hand is weak and, in contrary, exposing bad, unmatched cards with a strong hand. Besides, as far as the player with the best face-up hand opens the next betting round, players can choose to expose the best cards to gain this advantage.

Shifting Sands

This is a variation of Mexican Stud, where the first card that a player decides to expose, and all cards that match it are wild in the hand of this certain player.

Monterey

This is another Mexican Stud variation where the wild card is the one dealt before the showdown and all cards that match it.

Flip

This is something between Mexican Stud and regular Seven Card Stud. In the beginning of the game, four face-down cards are dealt to each player. Players choose any two of these four cards and turn them face-down. From this moment on, the game is played as standard Seven Card Stud. Two more cards are dealt face-up in regular manner and the final card is dealt face-down.
