Texans looking to expand gambling in Texas are coming at this issue from a new direction. The idea is for video slot machines to be put at racetracks and to allow casino gambling on Indian Reservation, and the money raised by the state would go to send students to College.
But many social conservatives in the Legislature are strongly against adding any gambling in Texas, and since the state is expecting to have a large budget surplus at the end of this year the power of new revenues for the state is not as strong as they would hope, but those in favor with the changes feel confident the can sway the opinions of the others.
"We're creating the largest economic development bill ever to come before the Texas Legislature," said a hotel and casino mogul leading the charge. "There's a pie here that's large enough that everybody can share it."
The bill would put casino style resorts, slot machines in racetracks and would allow casinos to be opened on Indian reservations. This move, combining 3 competing desires that have caused a split in support, would help the state raise $1.6 billion dollars to be used to pay for students College tuitions.
They hope to gain support because of concerns of the steep rise of college tuitions every year.
