From 2002 until June of 2006 a 33 year old from St Paul Park won over $39,000 while she was getting money from the government for food support low cost insurance and cash, according to charges filed against her recently.
The woman is being charged with theft and perjury. Both of these charges are felony crimes with a maximum sentence of 5 years for each of the 2 charges.
The woman's home number was unlisted, and attempts to contact the woman thru a former lawyer were unsuccessful. The woman has not been arrested and has been given a summons to appear in court on the 17th of April.
According to the economic assistance supervisor at the Washington County Human Services department many welfare recipients do some small time gambling and do not report it, but according to her the law says they must report any winnings.
The Human Services Supervisor was unable to provide any further information about the case, but they did say that they usually have to deal with one or two cases like this every year.
According to the charges the woman has been under investigation by the County since August of 2006, after her name appeared on a list distributed by the casinos of winners of sizable payouts.
This is information that the casinos regularly supply the State, according to county officials.
