100 police officers participated in a raid of four illegal gambling locations in Haverstraw at Friday. 11 people were arrested and charged on several misdemeanor arraignments, including possession of gambling records and disorderly conduct.
Haverstraw police Lt. Martin Lund described the raided rooms as crowded gathering places with active and apparent use of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution, with open to view slot machines, table games and computer betting. According to Lund, the joint force of hundred police officers from different police units inspected the reports on illegal gambling for a year, and planned the raiding operation carefully.
During the raids, the police confiscated gaming tables, slot machines, cash and drugs. The exact locations of the gambling rooms will publicized by the Haverstraw police only after the District Attorneys will approve it. The 11 people were released on appearance tickets and bonds after being accused by Village Justice Henry Gruffi. One of the suspects is a woman, nine of them are Haverstraw residents; the youngest suspect is 19, and the oldest is 61 years old.
