A rally is being held today at the Massachusetts State House to protest against a provision to a bill the Governor is trying to pass.
The goal of the bill is to allow 3 casino resorts to open in the state in hope of giving a big boost to the states economy in tourism, construction jobs and the thousands of full time permanent jobs working in the casinos and resorts.
The reason for the rally is to protest the addition of a provision to fine anyone caught gambling in an online casino as much as $25,000 and they could also face up to 2 years in prison.
The rally has been organized by a Law Professor at Harvard and head for the newly established Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society. According to the Professor currently more then 400,000 Massachusetts residents actively gamble in one form or another in an online casino.
The Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society has recently joined forces with the Poker Players Alliance, a Washington based lobbyist group run by the former New York Senator, Alfonse DAmato; in their attempt to reverse the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which made if illegal for banks to transfer funds to any account for the purposes of placing bets or the repayment of gambling earnings.
These protesters are expected to have some company, but these will be from church leaders and social activists that do not believe that any for of gambling should be illegal and are trying to stop the bill completely.
