After being ordered never to return to the casinos, John Edward Mealey Jr, became the third person in the last 20 years to be arrested for breaking the ban. This is according to officials from the Gaming Control Board.
The 67 year old was processed at the Washoe County Jail and charged with 9 counts of Unlawful entrance to a licensed gaming establishment. Because these charges are only a gross misdemeanor he could face up to one year in jail and $1000 dollars in fines for each of the 9 charges.
Mealey was released after paying his bail.
Gaming Control Board agents spotted Mealey going into some of Nevada's casinos in June and July, and that he placed bets on baseball games. He was picked up at the Diamonds Casino, which is in Downtown Reno.
Mealey was banned from Nevada casinos in 2001, after the entire gaming Control Board voted in favor of the ban due to Mealey's criminal past.
Along with the Board's decision came an explanation that having a criminal of Mealey's ilk in the casinos would have a negative affect on the public's confidence that the industry is a legitimate industry.
Besides his convictions for possession and dealing of heroin and forgery, he has also been found guilty of using devices to tamper with slot machines ability to stop making payouts.
The casino can also be charges a fine for allowing someone into the casino who is on the ban list, but the picture the casinos have for Mealey was taken 7 years ago and he has lost weight and grown facial hair, so no fines are expected in this case.
According to authorities the book was first use to keep organized crime members out of the casinos.
