What is a Slot Machine?

Slot machine is a mechanical or an electronic device that displays different patterns of symbols and pays back according to the pattern displayed. Classic slot machine devices are mechanical. They contain a number of reels (usually three or five) with symbols printed on their outer side, and a lever connected to the reels though a slot machine mechanism. When a player pulls the lever, it spins the reels. The slot machine mechanism connects each reel to the lever through a separate gear systems, so each reel is spun with a different speed. When a certain reel slows down, a breaking system stops it and fixes its position, so the symbols printed on different reels form straight horizontal lines.

The payouts of a slot machine usually are based on these lines. A line that contains three equal symbols usually pays some money. Some symbols are rarer and more valuable. So, if a line contains three rare symbols, the player is paid more money than if he gets three equal symbols of lower value.

There are thousands of slot machine variation and each one has its own rules. Some pay out only when the symbols match in the central line, others take into the account other lines too. Some give the player several spins and allow him to hold some of the reels for the next spin, and so on.

Nowadays classic mechanical slot machine has been replaced almost completely by an electronic device called video slot machine. A video slot machine has the same principle as the classic device, but the whole mechanical process is simulated by a computer and displayed on a video monitor. Such structure permits many new abilities. One of the special features common at video poker machines is bonus games. If the player gets a certain combination of symbols, he plays a different game on the same video display and earns his bonus. For example, if the player gets three Bonus symbols in the same line, the monitor displays three chests, with one of them containing a large money prize. If the player selects the right chest, he wins this prize, and returns back to the slots game.
