The Great Game of UNO

UNO is a fantastic game that can be played for days on end without anyone winning or it can be wound up in a matter of minutes. Turning this into a gambling game is easy and is very fun to make small bets with your friends over the outcome of the game or other components in the play of the game.

The Basics of UNO

To start, each player is dealt 7 cards, the rest of the cards are placed face down to form the draw pile. The top card of the draw pile gets turned over to become the first card in the discard pile. The first player must match the first discard by either color or number to play, as well as a Wild Card, if he cannot, then that player must draw a card and if he can play it, then plays it, if not then the player to the left of him plays.

When you are down to one card left in your hand you must yell UNO , which means one in Spanish. Failing to do this can result in your having to take two cards from the draw pile. That is, if your opponents do not notice. Once one player has no cards left, the hand is over and the points are scored.

Choosing the Dealer

Each player takes a card, the player with the highest number deals. The cards with words are duds, so pick a number if you want to be the dealer, it does have its advantages. Player to the left of the dealer starts.

Winning or Going Out

If the last card played in the game is a Draw Two card or a Draw Four, then the next player does draw the cards, and will be counted towards that players total at the end of the scoring round. If you play through the deck and no one is out, reshuffle and play until someone wins.

Scoring

When a player runs out of cards, he receives points for the cards remaining in his opponents hands as follows:

  • All cards through 9 Face value
  • Draw 2 : 20 points
  • Reverse : 20 points
  • Skip : 20 points
  • Wild : 50 points
  • Wild Draw 4 : 50 points
  • The winner is usually the first player to reach 500 points, however you can play the reverse and the points in your hand are allotted to you and the first player to reach 500 points becomes the loser and the player with the fewest points wins.
